The first initiative of its kind in the UK, The Black Love Project is based on an online survey, covering love, sex, dating, relationships and parenting, as well as focus groups and filmed interviews conducted in different parts of the country. Nearly 800 Black Britons have so far completed the survey, edging us towards our goal of 1000 by the summer 2018.
Produced by Words of Colour Productions, in collaboration with publishing veteran, editor and writer Patsy Isles and AMC Media, the initial findings of the survey were launch at Bush Theatre on Wednesday 25 October 2017. The findings have already surprised, informed and challenged misconceptions about our relationships (from friendships to sibling and parental love to romantic love) and our portrayal in the media and on film and TV. Find out more about the project here.
Documentation of LGBT black experiences can be hard to find – harder than it is to find information and histories about white LGBT people and so it reflects the forward thinking, open and inclusive ethos of Words of Colour to not only get in touch with us to be part of The Black Love Project, but with other LGBT people in other areas of the UK. It also made this opportunity doubly important for us, knowing that we were contributing to a project that will be made widely accessible to people of all ages, sexualities, genders and races.
