Angie Thomas is making waves in publishing in her native US and the UK with her arresting and timely young adult novel ‘The Hate U Give’. During her UK tour, Words of Colour Productions manage to snag a 15 minute sit down interview with the New York Times #1 bestselling author at Waterstones Piccadilly on Thursday 13 April 2017, just before her double hander with award-winning YA novelist Patrice Lawrence (Orangeboy). She spoke about her passion for writing, the appeal of writing fiction about 16 year old girls, the problem with publishing industry’s treatment of writers of colour and why hip-hop, its misogyny and the unsung role played by women in its creation will feature in her second novel, which she describes as “8 Mile with a black girl”.
